and spotlight on Norway, Is Jazz Dead (Or Has It Moved to a New Address)? - New Music from Norway, comes to us via British jazz writer Stuart Nicholson's book on the globalization of jazz that recognizes Norway as a forefront of redefining America's indigenous art form. The showcase features three North American premieres that exemplify what Nicholson calls the "Nordic Tone", as a counterpoint to contemporary American jazz masters who push the boundaries of jazz.
Hailed as one of the major annual jazz events in North America by the Jazz Journalists Association and lauded by critics as a "bullet train to jazz nirvana", the Portland Jazz Festival is the place to experience leading, international jazz innovators, with performances showcasing NW artists and stimulating jazz outreach programs.

PDX JAZZ WELCOMES DON LUCOFF, THE NEW MANAGING DIRECTOR
Scoring a major coup, PDX Jazz has appointed music industry veteran Don Lucoff as the organization's next Managing Director. Lucoff, president of DL Media, has represented nearly every major jazz label and a wide spectrum of jazz artists throughout his 26-year career. He has also driven the national publicity efforts of the Portland Jazz Festival for the past two seasons.
Lucoff joins Artistic Director and PDX Jazz co-founder Bill Royston, who holds his own impressive resume in jazz as an artistic director and event producer. Royston was nominated as Jazz Producer of the Year in both 2007 and 2008 by the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) and has been a driving force behind bringing groundbreaking jazz to the Portland area for 14 years.

PHAROAH SANDERS - a most distinctive tenor saxophone player and a legend, he's one of the last living members of John Coltrane's late ensembles of the mid-'60s.
DAVE HOLLAND QUINTET - multi-award and poll-winning bassist, composer, arranger and bandleader, he brings his renowned quintet to Portland.
MINGUS BIG BAND - an all-star ensemble dedicated exclusively to the music of the composer and bassist, Charles Mingus, this 15 piece big band operates under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, and features some of the top names in jazz.

Following their recent ZE 30 anniversary compilation album, Strut’s collaboration with mighty New York imprint ZE Records continues this Autumn with Zevolution, bringing together new and rare DJ edits of ZE tracks by 14 leading producers.
Originally tabled in 2004 by Manchester DJ Greg Wilson, the project spawned a 12” featuring an excellent Optimo re-work of James White’s ‘Contort Yourself’ before the untimely death of Lizzy Mercier Descloux took label founder Michel Esteban away to Brazil. The project was shelved.
Since then, as the culture for disco re-edits has burgeoned, ZE has continued to be a prime source for DJs with dozens of re-edits surfacing in recent years, re-working and extending the label’s experimental post-punk grooves for maximum dancefloor punch. Many of the edits have become classics in their own right – on this album, we feature Todd Terje’s ‘Friendly Children’ re-work of Gichy Dan’s ‘On A Day Like Today’, looping its nagging kids chorus, and Soul Mekanik’s dubbed out treatment of Kid Creole’s ‘Annie’, still a staple in many DJ boxes. Others have surfaced briefly on limited white label 12s or on blog sites – the prolific Social Disco Club from Porto and Idjut Boys, whose brilliant re-touch of another Kid Creole track here, ‘I’m Corrupt’, is much in-demand.
For the album, Strut also commissioned a fresh batch of versions, many transforming seminal ZE tracks which have previously been tricky to play in clubs. Richard Sen sews together brilliantly the two parts of James White’s fidgety ‘Almost Black’, Italian DJ team The Barking Dogs create a tracky beast from Arto Lindsay’s beatless ZE experiment ‘Pini Pini’ and Luke Howard and Felix Dickinson from Horse Meat Disco create the best club version yet of Aural Exciters’ ‘Spooks In Space’. For the ‘heads’, there are ultra-rare tracks too – Fat Camp resurrect a David Gamson track ‘No Turn On Red’, previously only available on an NME cover mount cassette.
ZEVOLUTION features cover artwork based on the original ZE Records 12“ house bag design. Package contains an extensive booklet including an introduction by re-edit king Greg Wilson and sleeve notes by Bill Brewster of DJ History.

About DJ Santo:
DJ Santo is the host of groundbreaking radio program Something Different on Portland's Jazz Station 89.1 KMHD. He is also a regular DJ on WNYE's Mo'Glo radio program in NYC which features modern global sounds. He's recently spun at VIP after parties for Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and Thievery Corporation and opened for the Budos Band, Alice Russell, Zap Mama, Omega Watts, and Nomo. Chauncey Canfield is a multi-instrumentalist and the producer of DJ Santo's radio program Something Different and his sessions for Mo'Glo. The duo have 4 releases as Soulphonic Soundsystem and their music has been licensed for CSI, Entourage and several compilations. A new album release is planned for late 2010.

Rev. Shines is one of the most prolific & significant DJ’s to touch the Portland music scene. Both a producer and encyclopedia for music, this music head is more than your average DJ. He is a music aficionado that definitely knows his way around any record store.

On the heels of his extremely successful Inspiration Information collaboration with The Heliocentrics, Mulatu Astatke teams up with Strut once again for the first complete overview of his career, including many rare sides which have never before been compiled for world wide release.
Vibraphone and keyboard player, master arranger and bandleader, Mulatu Astatke is one of the all time greats of Ethiopian music, and the creator of his own original music form, Ethio jazz. Through the acclaimed Ethiopiques album series and through featuring on the soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers, his music has belatedly reached a global audience and a new, younger generation of fans. In November of last year, he recorded an inspired new album with London psych jazz band The Heliocentrics for Strut’s Inspiration Information studio collaboration series. Now, Strut are proud to present, for the first time anywhere, the definitive Mulatu career retrospective covering his landmark ‘60s and ‘70s recordings.
Mulatu is a true pioneer of African music. He was the first Ethiopian musician of his generation to travel extensively and to record abroad – he studied in the UK in Wales and at Trinity College Of Music in London, cutting his teeth on the buoyant London jazz scene of the early ‘60s. He became the first African student to attend Harvard and he lived and recorded in New York, developing a unique sound that fused Western jazz with traditional Ethiopian melodies. As Mulatu says, “it took a long time to get the balance, to let the colours and the feelings of the Ethiopian modes shine through.” Returning to "Swinging Addis" during the late ’60s, he became a pivotal figure, arranging for many of the country’s top vocalists and developing rich, dense textures in his own music during the final years of Selassie’s reign and the mid-‘70s rule of the Derg Communist military junta.
Tracing the progression of his Ethio jazz experiments with full access to all of the labels for whom he recorded, Mulatu Astatke: New York-Addis-London is the essential Mulatu. Covering his first recordings in the UK during 1965, his groundbreaking fusions for the small Worthy label in New York and his key ‘70s recordings back in Addis on Amha, Phillips and Axum, the album features comprehensive sleeve notes by Miles Cleret, boss of the excellent Soundway Records imprint, and rare, previously unseen photos from Mulatu’s personal archive.
